By Nawaz Marican, CNET.com

SINGAPORE--The inaugural Internet World Asia Industry Awards will witness a close tie between Singapore and Hong Kong Internet companies.

Awards organizer Penton Media Inc announced the 58 finalists (including companies and individuals) in 12 categories today.

Singapore led the pool with 21 nominations, followed by Hong Kong (18), China (7), India (6), Malaysia (3) and one from Japan, Korea and Pan Asia each.

"We are pleasantly surprised by our nomination. We hope that we will continue to deliver and make an impression on the Asian Internet scene," said Patrick Grove, chief executive officer of Catcha.com. The company was nominated the Hottest New Face of the Internet.

In the Internet Service Provider of the Year category, newcomer StarHub Internet beat its more experienced counterparts in Singapore--SingNet and Pacific Internet--for a nomination seat.

"The nomination itself is an honor. This is going to put us in an advantageous position when talking to potential content partners so as to deliver better value added services to our customers in Singapore," said StarHub Internet general manager, Tan Tong Hai.
